Food Allergy Facts
A food allergy is an abnormal response to a food triggered by the body's immune system. Approximately 12 million Americans (4% of the population) suffer from food allergies. The most commonly effected are children (1 in 17 children under the age of 3).
Nearly 90% of all food allergies are derived from 8 major allergens - milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, and soy. These allergens can cause various reactions which primarily include, tingling in the mouth, hives, swelling of the lips, face, tongue, and or throat, wheezing, congestion or trouble breathing, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, and dizziness or fainting. Anaphylaxis is the most severe allergic reaction that is
rapid in onset and may cause death.
Though most children outgrow allergies to milk, wheat, eggs, and soy there is currently no cure for food allergies. Children rarely outgrow an allergy to tree nuts, peanuts, fish or shellfish. Strict avoidance of these allergens is the only way to avoid a reaction. This is why it is so important to create awareness and to educate people on the seriousness of food allergies.
I hope here at Food Allergy Families we are able to help your family find ways to make living with these allergies easier. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have. We would be pleased to hear from you!
